When to Head to Your Nearest Emergency Room: How to Identify an Emergency
If you experience severe pain that comes out of nowhere, if you feel a condition is life-threatening, or if you or a loved one suddenly experiences a drastic change of health — play it safe. Call 911 immediately to head to the closest emergency room if you're experiencing:

What to Expect When You Visit Our ER
We know you have lots of questions about what’s happening. Count on us to answer each one patiently and thoughtfully. We’ll have a few questions, too, because the more information we have, the more quickly we can help you heal. To start off, our expert ER staff will ask for basic things like your name, birthdate, medical history and the reason for your visit. We’ll also take your vital signs. Then we’ll decide how to best move forward.
In our 24-hour emergency room, we use a system known as triage to help us determine the order in which patients receive care. This means a patient suffering from a suspected stroke may receive care sooner than someone not in a critical condition. Sometimes, this can mean earlier treatment for a later-arriving patient, but you can rest easy knowing we’ll do our best to treat everyone in a timely manner, and that we’re fully committed to giving you the best emergency medical treatments available.
To help minimize your stress and prepare for every possibility, you may want to consider keeping certain information on you at all times. Carrying an information card in your wallet or purse is a great way to be prepared for a sudden trip to the emergency room. Including the name and number of your primary care physician, a list of your medications and drug allergies and any advance directives (like powers of attorney or health care proxy) can be helpful.

Diagnosing a Stroke

If you’re experiencing stroke symptoms, call 911 right away. You want answers and solutions. You want them now. The emergency stroke team at AdventHealth Carrollwood is comprised of highly skilled clinicians who are trained and committed to recognizing and providing prompt stroke care. It starts with a diagnosis. Your initial screening will include a discussion about your medical history and risk factors, combined with an assessment of your symptoms. If we suspect a stroke, we’ll act fast, diagnosing you with the help of a number of tests, including:

Blood tests
Computed tomography (CT) scans
Angiographies
Carotid ultrasounds
Echocardiographies
Electrocardiograms (EKGs)
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Physical exams
Neurology consults

Signs and Symptoms of Stroke

When it comes to strokes, it’s important to call 911 right away. It’s also important to be informed. When you understand stroke symptoms, you can be better prepared and empowered to recognize when you or a loved one need help. There are a few types of strokes, including:

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures
Ischemic stroke is the most common type and happens when a clot blocks a vessel supplying blood to the brain
Transient ischemic stroke, also called a “mini-stroke,” is a short episode of stroke symptoms that do not cause permanent damage but can lead to serious future strokes

If you or a loved one experiences symptoms of a stroke, like paralysis, numbness, dizziness, or confusion, stay calm and seek help. Use the letters in the acronym "B.E.F.A.S.T." to quickly identify stroke symptoms. The acronym stands for:

Balance issues (dizziness)
Eyes (loss of vision)
Face drooping
Arm weakness
Speech difficulty
Time to call 911

In addition to the symptoms listed above, a hemorrhagic stroke can also feel like a severe headache.
