What is an ear wax?
Earwax or cerumen is a yellowish, waxy substance produced in the ear canals to protect the inner ear and eardrum. It helps trap dirt, dust, and other small particles, preventing them from reaching the delicate structures of the inner ear.
However, excessive earwax buildup can lead to common signs like ear pain, feeling of fullness, tinnitus, and hearing loss. If left untreated, too much wax can potentially cause damage to the ear and further complications. This is why ear wax removal, or “cerumen management” in more medical terms, is important for quality of life.
Is ear wax removal important?
Our ears are delicate instruments, and earwax protects them from foreign particles in dusty environments. However, excessive buildup can lead to significant issues. Earwax blockage causes frustrating symptoms like ear pain and muffled hearing. Untreated earwax can even affect your balance and cause vertigo. With narrow ear canals, it’s harder for the wax to naturally escape.

Does ear candling work for cleaning ears?
Ear candling involves placing a hollow candle, usually a fabric tube soaked in beeswax in the outer ear canal. The candle burns for around 15min and when done a waxy substance is left in the stub. A small trial took oto endoscopic photos before and after ear candling. They show that no wax was removed from the ears with impacted wax, and candle wax was deposited in the ears without wax -meaning, if you did not have wax in your ear canal, now you do! In conclusion, there is no evidence to suggest ear candling is an effective treatment for ear wax removal. On the contrary, ear candling is associated with considerable risk and harm, if you are thinking “ear wax removal near me” please seek professional ear cleaning with our health care provider.
